Flight Instructor Course FAQ

What are the prerequisites for the FI(A) course?

+

You need to hold a CPL(A) or PPL(A) with at least 200 hours total flight time (including 150 as PIC), have passed the CPL theoretical knowledge exams, and hold a valid Class 1 or Class 2 medical certificate.

How long is the Flight Instructor course?

+

The FI(A) course typically takes 2-3 months depending on weather and scheduling. It includes at least 30 hours of flight instruction training and 25 hours of teaching and learning theory.

Can I build hours as a flight instructor?

+

Yes. Becoming a flight instructor is one of the most common and effective ways to build flight hours toward your ATPL. Many SAA graduates work as instructors while accumulating the 1,500 hours needed to unfrost their ATPL.

What career paths are available after the FI rating?

+

The FI(A) rating opens several paths: you can instruct at a flight school while building hours, add additional instructor ratings (IRI, CRI, MEI), or progress toward airline employment once you reach the required hour minimums.
